Orbital’s Antares Rocket

It’s important to keep in mind that SpaceX is not the only commercial space program that is scheduled to visit the ISS this year. Orbital has the Antares rocket that is scheduled for it’s COT’s demonstration flight in the 3rd quarter and it’s first trip to the ISS as a Cargo Resupply mission in the fourth quarter.

Orbital has assembled a world-class team for the development of the Antares medium-class space launch vehicle. The two-stage launch vehicle is designed to meet the highest NASA and DoD mission success standards, and incorporates flight-proven subsystems to reduce development schedule and risk. Antares currently has a manifest of nine missions to launch Orbital’s Cygnus advanced maneuvering spacecraft to deliver supplies to the International Space Station.

By leveraging flight-proven technologies and best-in-class engineering, Antares aims to provide reliable and affordable access to orbit and Earth escape trajectories for civil, military and commercial payloads” -Orbital

Currently the Antares is undergoing testing at Wallops.
For the next several days, Orbital will be conducting “pathfinder” operations for the critical process of rolling out and erecting the Antares rocket at the MARS launch Pad 0A at Wallops Island.” -Orbital

Antares next test will be a first stage static firing in May 2012.

Third Quarter – COTS demonstration mission

Fourth Quarter – CRS Mission #1
