Delta IV Heavy will launch the first flight test of the Orion Spacecraft

Scheduled for 2014, Lockheed Martin announced that the Delta IV Heavy will be used to lift the Orion spacecraft on Exploration Flight Test 1.

The unmanned capsule will be launched to an altitude of more than 3,600 miles. This is about 15 times further that the low orbit International Space Station flies.

Lockheed Martin chose the United Launch Alliance to use their Delta IV Heavy to lift the unmanned capsule into space. The craft will re-enter the atmosphere at nearly 20,000 mph surely testing the capability of this capsule.
