Mars presents scientist with a difficult task. How do you safely land a craft capable of being manned. It’s easier on the moon with no atmosphere. It’s even easier on earth where the atmosphere is thick and can slow a craft down substantially. Mars with it’s thin atmosphere presents a great challenge. Over 60% of craft sent have failed at the task of landing and they were small craft. Here is a great article on the subject that discusses the problem and even a possible solution ( the Hypercone).
